New Card - FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is happening?

Following a review of the AA Smartfuel programme by joint venture partners Smartfuel New Zealand Limited and AA New Zealand, a decision was made to end the programme on 31 January, 2024.

For now, until 31 January 2024, it’s business as usual. The AA Smartfuel programme continues and cardholders can keep earning AA Smartfuel discounts at participating retailers including bp and Countdown, and redeeming discounts at bp and GAS.

  • Why is AA Smartfuel ending?

In light of the recent changes to the loyalty landscape in New Zealand, a full review of the AA Smartfuel programme was undertaken. The resulting decision made by shareholders was to wind-down the programme.  AA will now focus on growing the AA Member Benefits programme.

  • Does that mean AA Member Benefits is ending?

No – AA Member Benefits is a distinct programme offered only to Members of the AA. This programme contains many discounts and benefits and we will continue to expand this programme over time.

It is only the AA Smartfuel programme that is ending – this is a joint venture which offers AA Smartfuel cardholders, including AA Members, fuel discounts.

  • When does the Smartfuel programme end?

The programme ends on Wednesday 31 January 2024.

  • What happens to discounts I have after 31 January 2024?

Any unused discounts will no longer be valid after 31 January, 2024 so make sure you redeem discounts at bp or GAS, or convert them to other rewards before 31 January, 2024. Visit aasmartfuel.co.nz for more information.

  • Can’t the discounts be transferred to the new Countdown loyalty programme?

No – that is not possible. The Countdown programme is run by them and is not associated with the AA.

  • Can I still use my AA Membership or AA Smartfuel card as a Onecard?

As a result of the AA Smartfuel programme ending on 1 February 2024 you will no longer be able to use your Membership or AA Smartfuel cards as a Onecard.

  • What do I do with my card after 31 January 2024?

We are sending all AA Members a new Membership card on 25 January, for using from 1 February. Please dispose of your old card carefully. In order to protect your privacy we recommend cutting the card in half through the strip, your name and membership number, and disposing of the two pieces in separate rubbish bins.

If you're an AA Smartfuel cardholder, please dispose of your old card carefully. In order to protect your privacy we recommend cutting the card in half through the strip, your name and membership number, and disposing of the two pieces in separate rubbish bins.

  •  Why do I need a new membership card?

The current AA Membership card includes the AA Smartfuel and Countdown logos. We are required to supply new membership cards to all AA Members that do not feature these logos as the Smartfuel programme is coming to an end.

  • Can I recycle my old card?

Unfortunately plastic cards cannot be recycled at this time, so carefully disposing in the rubbish is the best way to get rid of your old card.  In order to protect your privacy we recommend cutting the card in half through the strip, your name and membership number, and disposing of the two pieces in separate rubbish bins.

  • Why aren’t you do you doing a digital membership card like other organisations have?

We’re working on this, and we look forward to giving our Members the option of a digital membership card in the future. We don’t have a set date for this, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do.

  • What does AA have for me once the Smartfuel programme ends?

Not only does the AA offer 24/7 Roadservice for Members (whether you are a passenger or a driver), Members also get access to a huge range of Member Benefits in wellbeing, home, travel, entertainment, dining and on-the-road services which you can check out on our website, aa.co.nz/benefits.

  • Are there plans for AA to offer a different fuel programme after AA Smartfuel ends?

We’re always looking for new partners and benefits for AA Members as we continue to enhance our AA Member Benefits programme.

  • Where can I find more information?

You can check out AA Smartfuel FAQs on aasmartfuel.co.nz

  • Why does my new Membership card not have the AA Plus or Motorhome Plus on it anymore?

AA is no longer issuing different cards for different Membership types. Rest assured your Membership type is visible on our internal systems and you still have access to all the benefits associated with your Membership.

  • Why has my Membership Card number changed?

Your new Membership card has a slightly different Membership number printed on it, for security purposes.  All the Membership benefits that you’ve been enjoying to date will be linked to this new Membership card number behind the scenes, so there’s nothing more you need to do here.
