1. Mangemangeroa Reserve
You can find the entrance to this interesting walking track on Somerville Road in Howick. A mixture of farmland, native bush and estuary views, this area has a rich history dating back to the 14th century when it was occupied by Ngāi Tai and Ngāti Paoa. There are a few different pathways which all showcase plenty of native flora, and if you’re lucky, a variety of fauna too. Be careful of slippery tracks if it’s been raining and allow about three hours for the full walk from Somerville Road to Shelly Park Beach. You don’t need to be an intrepid walker for this, but an average level of fitness is recommended.
2. Howick Historical Village
Located within the Lloyd Elsmore Park area, the Howick Historical Village is a living history museum which takes a look back at Howick’s colonial past. Set within seven acres, the village depicts a typical Fencible Settlement from the period between 1840 to 1880. The buildings are authentic and well maintained, as are the gardens. You can explore the 30 original historic buildings, while staff wander around in period costumes. Once a month the village really comes to life on the Live days and if you’re there on a weekday you’ll often find visiting school groups. The onsite café serves delicious, homemade food.
3. Grangers Taphouse
At Half Moon Bay Marina, right on the edge of Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, Grangers is the place to eat and drink with a view. The food is fresh and interesting and you can try a small bite, have a drink at the bar, or dinner with friends. Borrow one of their bikes after lunch to explore the Marina, ride the boardwalk through to Bucklands Beach, or head in the other direction to explore the Rotary Walkway. There’s always something happening at Grangers… Sunday roast night in winter, weekend brunches, and live music on a Saturday. Make sure you try the potato skins.
4. Clevedon
Just 35 minutes from Auckland’s CBD, Clevedon is a great spot for a weekend drive. Visit on a Sunday and you’ll find the local Farmers Market in full swing from 8.30am – 1.00pm selling seasonal produce, fresh baking, coffee and specialty foods. Stop in at Clevedon Coast Oysters to sample some of their juicy oysters or try out the honey and bee products at Cammells Honey.
5. Pakuranga Rotary Walkway
Shared by cyclists and walkers, the Pakuranga Rotary Walkway stretches 9km from Prince Regent Drive in Farm Cove to the Panmure Bridge. Fully paved and entirely flat, the route can be accessed from many of the local roads by connecting paths. Along the way you’ll pass the popular Farm Cove Snakes and Ladders park where kids can play the game along a hillside, acting as their own moving counters. Along the walkway, you will find signs with information about the history and the environment of the area.
