Egmont National Park: the shining mountain
Seen from above, the Egmont National Park on the western coast of the North Island forms almost a perfect circle, surrounding the beautiful Mount Taranaki.
This is pleasant walk uphill through changing alpine rainforest, with an optional detour to a lookout point offering views of Mount Taranaki and out to the coast.
Follow the boardwalk past the Camphouse in Egmont National Park. From here, the track leads past Ambury Monument and climbs a long series of steps. At the next junction, the track loops back to the visitor centre through kāmahi and Hall’s tōtara forest.
Alternatively, from the junction, continue up the Holly Hut Track for 10 minutes to reach a popular lookout point. Weather on the mountain changes rapidly – be well prepared with suitable clothing for all conditions.
