To lands near, far and fantastical...
Come with us as we soar into a new year of adventures in ballet. Inspired by the beauties of our own backyard, as much as the outermost reaches of our glorious, fragile world, this is a new season for everyone to share, with anticipation and delight. From the cosmic wonder and hope of The Firebird to the gentle sparkle of The Nutcracker, this is our year-long gift to you.
The Royal New Zealand Ballet with Scottish Ballet: 14 – 15 March
Scottish Ballet visits Aotearoa New Zealand for the first time in 2025, and we are delighted to be sharing the stage for three Wellington-only performances to showcase contemporary works that are unique to both companies, created in a spirit of celebration and joy.
The Firebird with My Brilliant Career: 30 April – 01 June
Loughlan Prior’s The Firebird – a fairytale of a desert world where water is infinitely precious – was a huge hit for the RNZB in 2021. The national tour, which enjoyed sell-out performances in Wellington and Auckland, was cut short due to Covid restrictions, so 2025 is the first time that The Firebird has been seen in the South Island. Tracy Grant Lord’s stunning designs, coupled with immersive projections by POW Studios, provide the backdrop for Prior’s expressive choreography, all built on the foundation of Stravinsky’s epic score.
Home, Land and Sea: 24 July – 09 August
Continuing the RNZB tradition of adventurous contemporary commissioning and collaborations, Home, Land and Sea presents three intriguing ballets inspired by journeys in unknown seas, and what it means to come home.
The programme takes its name from Moss Te Ururangi Patterson’s new work, Home, Land and Sea, created for six dancers from the RNZB and six from the New Zealand Dance Company.
The Nutcracker: 30 October – 20 December
Summer 2025 will be celebrated with an eagerly anticipated new production of the world’s most beloved ballet classic, The Nutcracker. Central to Christmas memories for generations of audiences, The Nutcracker is a timeless celebration of family, fantasy and growing up, where ‘home for Christmas’ is the most powerful magic of all.
A uniquely Kiwi touch transports our audiences to the nostalgia of childhood holidays at the beach in Act I, before being carried in Act II to the snowy Southern Alps, where we encounter a fairytale Kingdom of the Sweets – some of which may look quite familiar…
