Please make sure you're prepared for your test.
Wait times for driver licence tests have increased since Waka Kotahi NZTA changed the fees, so make sure you prepare well for your driver licence test. If you don't pass, you may need to wait a while to get another slot. If you get a test booking and can't use it, please make sure you cancel. Even an hour's notice will mean someone else can use the slot.

When can you sit your learner licence test?
You need to be 16 years or older before you can book to sit your learner licence theory test.
You need to be well prepared for the test questions with the right level of knowledge about the New Zealand Road Code. Studying the Road Code and practicing test questions will make sure that you have the best opportunity of passing.
Booking your learner licence test at your local AA Licensing Agent
Driver licensing rules do not permit learner applications to be booked by phone or email, therefore it is necessary to go in-person to your local driver licencing centre to start your learner licence application and book the theory test.
At your local AA Licensing Agent you can:
- Apply for and renew a driver licence
- Pay all driver licensing fees
- Book all driver licence tests and pay the fee for every test
- Do the learner licence test
- Have your driver licence photo and signature taken
In-person requirements for learner licence tests
When you're ready to book your learner licence theory test you will need to complete the following in-person requirements at a licensing outlet such as AA Licensing Agent.
- Bring evidence of identity
- Get a medical certificate if required
- Fill out the learner licence application form (DL1)
- Sign a screen so we can capture your signature for your learner licence
- Do an eyesight test at your AA Licensing Agent
- Have your photo taken at your AA Licensing Agent
- Book a time to do your learner licence test with AA
- Pay the applicable licence fee
Doing your learner licence theory test
The learner licence theory test has 35 questions. If you answer at least 32 correctly, you pass. It’s a computerised multi-choice test.
If you miss your appointment time or you get more than three questions wrong, you’ll have to re-sit your learner licence test. That means you’ll have to fill out a new application, book and pay another test fee.
If you pass, we’ll give you a temporary learner licence to use until your photo learner licence arrives in the mail. If you don’t already have them, you can also buy a pair of yellow L plates.
