The AA and AA Partners

The New Zealand Automobile Association (Incorporated) (AA) works with other organisations (AA Partners) to provide you with great products and services.  

AA Partners include our subsidiaries, joint ventures, partnerships, franchisees, contractors, licensees and any other entities which help us provide you with a product, service or benefit. 

We” or “us” means the organisation referring to this Privacy Statement at the time you provide your personal information. This means whether it’s AA or an AA Partner, your personal information will be safely managed.  

The general Privacy Statement applies to most interactions with you.

Why we collect your personal information

To help us perform our everyday functions and purpose. You do not have to give us your personal information, but if you choose not to we may not be able to provide you with the product or service you have requested.

What personal information we collect

That depends on what product or service we are providing, but personal information we may collect includes:

  • your name
  • date of birth
  • postal address
  • residential address
  • email address
  • phone number
  • driver licence details
  • vehicle details
  • your photo or video (for example CCTV in AA Centres)
  • payment method and bank details
  • location information (for example when you use AA Roadservice)
  • your communications with us
  • your use of our products and services
  • AA Member Benefits you have enjoyed
  • employment history if you are applying to join our team

When we collect personal information

Whenever you interact with us, provided we need it for a legitimate purpose. For example, when you phone us, write to us, email us, use our website, complete a survey, enter a competition, purchase a service or product, visit our online shop or one of our AA Centres, AA Auto Centres, AA Vehicle Testing Stations, or AA Licensing Agents.

Our AA Member Benefit partners also share your personal information with us regarding purchase choices if you have enjoyed a discount because you are an AA Member. This lets us identify our most popular benefits and understand the benefits you enjoy, to help you get the best value for money from your Membership.

Sometimes we may collect personal information from other sources if you have authorised it, or if it is allowed by law. 

How we use your personal information

We use your personal information to help us offer and provide services and products to you. As part of doing that, we may need to use your personal information to:

  • confirm your identity
  • respond to your enquiries and communications
  • follow up on earlier communications, like quotes or where you have shown an interest in our products or services
  • send communications relating to products and services you have previously purchased, including renewal reminders
  • tell you about changes to our products and services, or to how we operate such as our hours, locations and policies
  • let you know about AA Member Benefits, including any discounts you have already used
  • directly inform you about other services or products we think you may like
  • see if you would like to renew any Memberships, or repurchase any products or services you have previously enjoyed
  • send you information on competitions, rewards, benefits, offers, discounts and any other opportunity we think you may like to know about
  • carry out research, which may involve calling or emailing you directly for your opinion, including why you may have changed your Membership
  • conduct credit checks with third parties if relevant to the service or product you have requested
  • conduct marketing analysis and profiling, collating statistics, and testing information
  • measure and improve our advertising and help us understand what may interest or assist you
  • identify improvements to our products and services
  • ensure we are following our policies and procedures correctly
  • review and respond to employment applications
  • combat fraud or harmful actions, for example by warning you about email phishing
  • provide evidence of an agreement, transaction, or contract
  • for any other uses that you authorise

Your email preferences

You can email us to change your preferences or use the unsubscribe or preference links at the bottom of our marketing emails. Your preferences may need to be updated separately with the AA and different AA Partners.

Marketing Association Do Not Call and Do Not Mail lists

We check the Marketing Association’s Do Not Call and Do Not Mail lists and do our best not to market by phone or postal mail to anyone on those lists unless you tell us otherwise. 

When we share your personal information

Sometimes we need to share your personal information with third parties. We only do this in limited circumstances, which may include when:

  • AA, AA Partners, or other third parties need it to perform the purposes listed above
  • required for contractual, legal, or regulatory purposes including a process of sale
  • required by our professional advisors
  • part of legal proceedings or prospective legal proceedings

How we keep your information secure

Our staff receive training to ensure that your information remains secure and is not disclosed or misused. We maintain strict security measures to protect your personal information. The procedures are constantly monitored and updated in accordance with the latest technology.

We may hold personal information overseas and in cloud storage where we are satisfied that the relevant providers and jurisdictions meet our security standards. 

How long we hold your personal information

We hold your personal information for as long as needed to meet the purposes listed above, or as required by law.

To access or correct personal information held by AA Partners, get in touch with them using the contact details provided with their product or service.

Cookies and tags

Cookies are small text files stored in your browser or device by websites or apps you visit. Tags are used to track user behaviour and integrate third-party services like analytics, advertising and social media.

Credit card details

If you pay AA using a credit card online, in store or by phone, your credit card information is not stored by AA during these transactions. All credit card transactions are conducted using a reputable payment gateway service provider approved by our cyber security team. 

Associated accounts

Where any AA Member has an Associate Member, products and services may be offered to both Members in the household jointly or singularly.

While we take care when handling combined information in Associate Memberships, please contact the AA if you have any safety or security concerns related to a former or current Member or Associate Member, or if you no longer wish to be on an Associate Membership.
