Renew or replace your driver licence

You can renew your licence or apply to replace a lost licence at your local AA Centre, AA Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agent or Mobile Unit.

Renewing your driver licence

You need to renew your photo driver licence every ten years, on or before the expiry date. NZTA Waka Kotahi will send you a renewal notice before it expires. Please check and update your current address with them.The back of the licence also shows the issue and expiry date of all classes and endorsements you may hold. 

Renewals cannot be done online or by phone. You will need to go to your nearest AA Centre, AA Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agent or Mobile Unit to renew your licence in person. It will take approximately 15 minutes. You'll need to:

Older drivers aged 75+

When you turn 75, you'll need to renew your licence. This licence will be valid for five years and you’ll need a medical certificate each time you renew your licence. In some cases, you may have to sit an on-road test.  When you turn 80 your licence will be valid for two years.

Replace a lost or stolen driver licence

Go to your nearest AA Centre, AA Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agent or Mobile Unit to replace your driver licence. You'll need to:
