At a recent Nissan product launch, showcasing a number of new models, we could've allowed the limelight to shine exclusively on the all new Qashqai, had it not been for Nissan execs pointing out the Murano is also entirely new.

Nissan freely admits that from a design perspective, the new Murano shares clear DNA with the original. While it bears striking similarity to its immediate ancestor, upon closer inspection it's clear the Murano has evolved into a more modern and luxurious vehicle.

Nissan New Zealand Managing Director, John Manly says "The new Nissan Murano is more stylish outside than before and more luxurious inside" and adds "It drives and performs better, it's more comfortable and has many new and innovative features. But at its heart are all the strengths that made the original such a success."

Most obvious changes are to the grille, headlights and tail lights.

The centre bar has been removed from the grille, accentuating the toothy smile and the distinctive horizontal Xenon headlights coupled with the LED taillight treatment make for a more dramatic external appearance

The basis of the new Murano is Nissan's latest D-platform, which is claimed to be almost 50 percent stiffer than before, enhancing NVH (noise / vibration / harshness) isolation by 75 percent.

Helping to reduce vibration and refinement, the previous 4 point engine mounting system has been replaced by an improved 6 point system with high rigidity brackets and additional torque rods.

The new multi-link rear suspension complements the strut-type system mounted on a subframe at the front. Extensive use of aluminium reduces weight while improved geometry coupled with front and rear anti-roll bars combine to improve handling.

Nissan's latest ALL MODE 4x4-i permanent all wheel drive system distributes torque on demand to where it is needed.

Under normal driving conditions much of the drive is sent to the front wheels but up to 50 percent can be channelled to the rear if required.

Powering the new Murano is a revised version of Nissan's VQ petrol engine, in this case a 3.5 litre V6, with power now boosted 19kW to 191kW and torque up by 18Nm to 336Nm. Fuel consumption is quoted at 10.9L/100km.

In keeping with Nissan's commitment to CTV technology, which they maintain optimises fuel economy, the Murano utilises the new re-engineered Xtronic CVT transmission. With its seamless shifting, the Xtronic CVT makes for smooth and refined power delivery when mated to the VQ engine.

The Murano comes standard with stylish double stitched leather upholstery, with 8 way electrical seat adjustment for the driver and 4 way adjustment for the front seat passenger. The use of aluminium highlights and soft touch switchgear add a modern look and quality feel to the spacious interior.

Keyless entry and intelligent key stop/start button are convenient features, as is the electrically operated tailgate for both opening and closing functions.

Audio system controls for the Bose six stack CD player are mounted on the steering wheel, as are the operating controls for the cruise control. Rain sensing wipers, auto headlights and tilt and rake steering column round up the classy cabin.

The Murano rolls on 18 inch alloys with 235/65 R18 tyres and a full size alloy spare.

Safety features include six airbags, featuring Nissan's Advanced Airbag System (AABS) with dual stage supplement front airbags and curtain airbags for front and rear seat occupants, as well as Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) which is Nissan's terminology for stability control. ABS braking with EBD and active headrests for front seat occupants are also fitted.

The new Nissan Murano is priced at $59,990.
