Recently I glided into the new MG4 Essence 64 and hit the city streets on an urban adventure in this minimalist, but well thought out dynamic hatchback. With its entry price of $54,995 (plus ORC) and qualification for the clean car rebate, the MG4 Essence 64 is a great entry EV for those wanting to dip their toes into the EV waters.
The standout feature of this car is the smoothness and ease of driving, almost like you are levitating over the condensed Auckland motorway on a cream puff. When I was putting it through its paces on the rush hour commute, I found the mood in the car relaxing and calm, while the mood outside – tense and stationary. I can see why the MG4 has been scooping up global awards recently as it cements its position as an affordable EV option in the New Zealand market.
The interior
The floating design maximised the front cabin space, and all passengers were in agreeance that the car felt roomier than they expected. With a hollowed console module keeping practical drive features in direct reach, it housed the Wireless Charger (which was super easy to access and use), plus the Hi-Tech Shift Selector, and Electric Parking Brake. The only thing I did struggle with was the location of the coffee/cup holder, this would have been better (and safer) within an arm’s reach.
The 10.25-inch infotainment system (which was easy to use once you got use to it) and 7” Instrument Cluster, further contributed to the feeling of ample room within this big, little car.
The exterior
I would aptly describe it as a ‘carpark head turner’. MG have pushed the boundaries of innovation and design to their absolute limits – and it has paid off. Its gliding lines and sleek panels beg for a closer look. It was the Active Grille and U shape bonnet that piqued my interest, complimented by the “Twin-Aero” Rear Spoiler and rear taillight cluster – culminating in a car with as much style as substance.
Performance
The MG4 accelerated surprising well with a claimed 7.2 seconds from 0-100 kph. You felt excited to see what the 150kW of power and 250 Nm of torque felt like as you entered the motorway. I was hopeful to see the stop-go lights on the motorway on ramp to experience the acceleration - to my excitement they were on, and I can say I wasn’t disappointed.
The Rear-Wheel-Drive configuration, 50:50 weight distribution, and lower centre of gravity contribute to agile handling and a comfortable, stable ride.
Final verdict
With MG’s company ethos ‘Take Charge’, they are empowering drivers to follow their lead down the electric revolution, and if the MG4 is where they are heading, I can’t wait to see what’s around the corner for the MG brand in the future.
