Holden Spark 2016 car review

The Holden spark is a simple, no frills micro hatch that’s fresh from success with its 5 star ANCAP safety rating. This car proves that you don’t have to be big and full of features to achieve 5 stars. The funky new design of the interior is pleasing to the eye - even the white, patterned trim adds style. Compared to the last Spark the changes are chalk and cheese. The new Spark boasts a sleeker exterior appearance, lower profile and now includes more technology that was previously unavailable in this vehicle segment.

Holden have a variety of new releases that have just landed in New Zealand but the Spark is their latest vehicle. It comes equipped with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, allowing your smartphone to integrate with the vehicle. This gives you access to certain apps such as navigation, the music on your phone and much more on the 7” touchscreen. It even has keyless pushbutton start, and Holden say “there is no reason why a micro car buyer should settle for micro levels of technology” – and we absolutely agree.

Micro in size only

Safety remains first priority. Despite its micro size, the Spark has a wealth of safety features that perform to the highest standards. In addition to a new stiffer and stronger architecture, this vehicle comes with six airbags and active safety features, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Start Assist, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), traction control and also a rear view camera for the LT model. Extensive testing in South Korea and Australia by Holden engineers has finely tuned the suspension, ride and handling of the Spark.

This roller skate actually moves

Powered by a new 73kW 1.4L engine, this roller skate actually moves and it demonstrates one of the best uses of CVT that I have driven in a long time - there was no slipping feeling or sense of unpleasantly high engine revving. With an impressive 5.2L/100km fuel economy, I barely even saw the gauge move while I was test driving it.

The LT model, priced at $19,990, has CVT while the LS, priced at $16,490, is available in a 5-speed manual.
