Since its inception in 2007 the Tiguan has been the preferred vehicle for many New Zealand families, with more than 7.6 million units sold worldwide.
Recently, the AA Motoring team were invited to the Auckland launch where we experienced the new Tiguan first hand.
The incoming model is bigger, longer and wider than before, with more interior and boot space. The boot also includes a removeable rear parcel tray which can be stored away under the rear tray – a simple but great idea.
Fun fact: The Tiguan moniker is a combination of the words tiger and iguana. In the new model, these naming emblems are discreetly etched in the rear door window glass so the kids can argue which side they are going to sit on –Tiger side or the Iguana side.
Other small styling changes across the board make the Tiguan better all-round. Exterior styling has been refreshed to include a bold rear end that will stand out in car parks. Inside, the Volkswagen ID range has had a major influence on design. The gear lever now sits on the right-hand side of the steering column, and everything else, including wipers and indicators is on the left.
Having two wireless phone chargers is a game changer. My current vehicle operates on a ‘first-in-best-dressed’ basis as the family battles for the one charging area, but in the Tiguan these conflicts evaporate. Plus, there are plenty of USB ports for cable charging, too.
When it comes to tech, the Tiguan’s 12.9” infotainment unit allows you to customise the home screen tiles and Driving Experience Controller provides different ambient light options – a great way to keep the kids amused all night long.
When it comes to safety, this is baked in. A 5-star ANCAP safety rating, central air bag, and the welcome additions of Front Cross Traffic Alert and Dynamic Road Sign means you’ll be in good hands.
Under the bonnet you’ll find a 1,395 cc four-cylinder in line turbo engine pushing out 110 kW at (5,000-6,000 rpm) and 250 Nm of torque at (1,500-3,500 rpm) in the Life and R Line 2WD. Tow rating on the Life and R Line 2WD is 750kg unbraked and an impressive 1,800kg braked.
Pricewise, the range starts with the Tiguan Life at $54,490 plus ORC, the R Line is $61,490 plus ORC, and the R Line AWD is $79,490 plus ORC.
