MG has made quite a splash in the New Zealand market with the recent launch of the new MG3 and MG3 Hybrid. 

MG’s introduction of the hybrid variant marks a significant step towards offering more environmentally friendly options for consumers, however the full MG3 lineup caters to different preferences with both ICE (petrol) engine and hybrid options, and the Excite and Essence models providing further choices. 

MG have stated that their goal is to make new cars accessible for everyone. Their strategy is to accommodate customers at different stages of their automobile journey, from first-time buyers to those seeking more advanced features. MG’s range progresses from entry-level options like the MG3 to enhanced technologies in models like the MG4 and upcoming MG5.

The current MG3 range starts at an affordable $25,990 including GST+ORC for the MG3 Excite ICE model, going all the way up to $31,990 including GST+ORC for the MG3 Essence Hybrid+.

The exterior features of the MG3 contribute to a more modern and refined aesthetic, aligning with MG's efforts to appeal to a broader audience with a blend of style, technology, and functionality.

New design elements include the muscled ribs of the bonnet and a front spoiler which provide a more aggressive, sporty look, possibly enhancing aerodynamics and adding to the visual appeal of the car's front end.

The MG3 also has energy-efficient LED headlights and 16-inch alloy wheels that not only enhance the aesthetics of the car but also tend to be lighter and provide better performance than steel wheels.

Inside, the MG3 has a refined interior that shows a focus on quality and comfort, enhancing the overall appeal of these vehicles.

However, there is no height adjustment available for the passenger seat. This feature is commonly found on the driver's seat to allow for customization and comfort, but its absence on the passenger side might be a consideration for potential buyers.

Another potential downside is the lack of telescopic adjustment on the steering wheel, which can be a useful addition for enhancing driver comfort and ergonomics.

But on the whole the comprehensive redesign from the ground up makes the MG3 a competitive option in its segment.

Under the bonnet, the MG3 produces a combined 155kW and the MG3 Hybrid + returns economy figures of 4.3 litres per 100km and 100 g/km CO2, this is assisted by a 1.83kW battery, that significantly boosts efficiency.

However, it’s not all roses. ICE models require the use of 95 fuel or higher, which quickly adds up.

Overall, it seems that MG is aiming to make a strong impression in the New Zealand market with a blend of affordability, innovation (such as hybrid technology) and appealing design elements.
