We started off at a speed of 50km/h and the cabin was quiet apart from a little noise emitting from the hitch. As we took on the hill on our test route, we smoothly accelerated to 80km/h with the transmission responding appropriately and again, there were no issues with control or slide when it came to testing performance on uneven surfaces.
On appearance, the boat we were towing dwarfed the SUV and I had initial concerns that the suspension may be soft but it balanced well and steering remained responsive both with and without its load and even under heavy braking. Performance was surprisingly solid considering it was operating at the upper limit of its specifications, although the size of the boat in comparison to the vehicle, did result in the triggering of blind spot monitoring sensors.
As a people carrier, the CX-5 is a fantastic option for families with its flexible 40/20/40 folding seat configuration, premium interior finishing and Mazda’s excellent i-ACTIVSENSE suite of safety technology. If you’re a frequent tower though or have a large boat to ferry out to the bach on the holidays, there may be more suitable options on the market.
Thanks to SeaCraft Miller Moyes for the test boat & trailer.
