I'm an experienced driver, however not in snowy conditions. I own a 2004 Subaru Legacy GTB Turbo, automatic, AWD. I recently had a frightening experience while driving down a ski mountain road.

Driving very slowly in first gear (without chains on) the road got very steep before a sharp corner with a sheer drop off. Because the car was gaining speed beyond a safe limit it was necessary to brake VERY GENTLY to retard the car. The rear wheels locked on the ice sending the car sideways.

Fortunately I didn't loose steering control and was able to get around the corner, just. Very scary! What should I or could I have done differently to avoid this ever happening again?

The only thing you could have done differently in my opinion is to have fitted chains to the vehicle.

This is the dangers with ice, the control of the car is often taken out of your hands even with the most experienced driver.

Always work on the side of caution and at least keep chains in the vehicle, as conditions can change very quickly.

It is always a good idea to practice fitting them to ensure they are suitable, and to avoid damage to the vehicle.
