I want to import a used caravan from the UK.
What kind of legislation or rules cover this and what kind of compliance do I need on the caravan.

A caravan is exempt from having to go through the entry certification process in NZ.
It will however need to be issued with a number plate and a licence label valid for up to one year.
This can be obtained by completing an MR2b form which is available at any NZAA centre or vehicle testing station and can be done prior to the caravan being towed off the wharf on arrival.
Once that is done and before it can be legally operated on NZ roads, the caravan will need to undergo a roadworthiness inspection or what is called a Warrant of Fitness check (WoF).
Towing the caravan specifically and directly to a vehicle inspection centre without a WoF is an accepted practice.
The NZAA has sites (vehicle inspection centres) around the main regions who can carry out the required inspection.
This is where you need to be very careful as any structural corrosion will be reason to fail the caravan until satisfactory repairs are carried out.
I'm not sure about caravans, but I do know under-body corrosion can be a big issue for used motor vehicles coming into NZ from the UK.
If the caravan has brakes, they must be working in order to pass the test as well as the other basic mechanical checks.
Be aware also, it is the registered owner's responsibility to ensure the caravan has a current electrical (240volt) warrant.
This is issued by a registered electrician and most camping grounds in NZ will not allow caravans into their parks without displaying a current and valid electrical sticker.
As this was in 2011, my question is; is this information stil up to date? ? I am importing 2 used caravans from the Netherlands (Europe) so I can just tow them to the testing station after filling in the form MR2B and receiving a license plate while the caravans are still at the warf? ? My caravans arrive tomorrow at the Auckland container terminal.
