What if your hybrid is not heard by pedestrians?

A recent frightening experience with a hybrid vehicle has prompted me to email you regarding the potential dangers of these vehicles.

The Toyota Prius Hybrid starts and drives off in electric silent "stealth" mode initially using its electric power source only.

When standing behind my parked car recently I nearly walked straight into a Prius grey phantom gliding away from the car park directly behind me.

There were no audible warnings that we have come to expect from a vehicle powered by a petrol or diesel engine. The vehicle in question did not stop.

I have contacted Toyota NZ who have acknowledge my concerns and have promised to table them at future meetings with the relevant staff from Toyota HO.

In the meantime I would like to remind all owners of these vehicles to take extreme startup care around children and all other pedestrians.

You are 40% closer to blind pedestrians when you are travelling before your hybrid can be heard approaching.

Please expect surprises and keep vigilant out there!

You raise a very good point as I can relate to a similar experience with a Prius moving silently passed me and being totally unaware of its presence.

Let's hope drivers of these vehicles become aware of the potential for an accident and stay alert in conditions where the petrol engine is not working.

I must also add a comment about the amount of people you see walking around with ear plugs fitted listening to their favourite radio station or music.

You do wonder sometimes if a petrol or diesel vehicle without its muffler fitted would ever attract their attention.
