I can't find anything about acceleration lanes in my 2006 copy of the Road Code.
Are these new and how does one tell the difference between an acceleration lane and a merging lane?

An acceleration lane (can also be known as a free flow slip lane) enables turning traffic to increase speed prior to merging onto a road (not usually in a 50kph area).
Conversely, they can be a deceleration lane for traffic to slow down prior to turning into a side street.
