Whilst I indicate when turning, I don't do so when I am in the far right or far left of 2 lanes marked out for turning right [or left] as it's fairly obvious where I am going. I will however indicate if one of the lanes is jointly used for traffic proceeding straight ahead and turning. Is it okay to do this. I had a friend who was stopped by Police some time ago for not indicating when turning right from the right turn lane at the lights but didn't issue any ticket. His argument was that it was clear where he was going. Can you enlighten me on this, as it seems fairly dumb indicating in this situation when the lane I am in can physically only take me in one direction.

I see your point, but it occurs to me that the lane markings for the lane you are in are very clear to you but may not be so clear, especially on a wet day, to other road users viewing from a different angle. This is especially the case where the intersection is on the crown of a hill, and a driver is in a very low car. You will note also that the shape of the markings, e.g. turn arrow, is very distorted to make it look more like an arrow to the user of that lane. Viewed from a different angle it looks very different. You can't be 100% sure about these things so I think best to always indicate turning right.
