How do you register a moped (49.6cc) for the first time and what are the costs and the process?

Any help would be appreciated as I have just got my learners and have just bought a brand new moped that hasn't been registered before.

You need to visit your local testing station and fill out a MR2 form to register the moped and be issued with a number plate and label.

We are aware of some testing stations who will not carry out this process without sighting the handbook for the moped and confirming the engine size and speed capabilities.

It does not require a Warrant of Fitness but it will need to meet basic safety standards if you are stopped by the authorities (lights, brakes, mirrors etc).

The cost is $117 for 12 months which includes the plate.

Remember you are limited to a speed of no more than 50kph with a moped so use the machine as intended by the manufacturer.
