I'm tidying up my vehicle and would like to get new standard issues government number plates.

Do you know if this can be done cheaply?

They cost a fortune to do through the plates website.

You can obtain a new set of conventional plates from an NZTA agent (testing station or an AA Centre) if the reason for the replacement is due to the originals being damaged, lost or stolen.

If you report the plates as stolen you may need to produce evidence this has been reported to the police.

You cannot simply hand over the originals and ask for new plates.

If for example, one plate was extensively damaged (front or rear impact) and cannot be restored to its original condition then you would be entitle to hand in the one remaining plate and request a new set. .

The cost to replace the plates is currently less than $20, you will be required to fill out a form and in due time a new set of ownership papers will be sent to you identifying the car with the new plate number.
