Kia ora. I was just wondering what some of the laws surrounding trikes (Harley Davidson, V8, VW or otherwise) are.

Even the simplest questions seem to be difficult to find clear answers to.

Are helmets required?

What licence do you need?

What are the rules surrounding passengers?

I would really appreciate any clarification you can offer

A trike is classed as an 'LE' type vehicle.

Under the heading LE comes LE1 or LE2 . This difference is dependent on the position of the single wheel (some are rear mounted, some front).

For both classes the following rule applies;

- An approved helmet must be worn at all times on any Class L vehicle
- A class 6 licence( motor cycle ) is required
- A pillion passenger may be carried, as long as they wear an approved helmet and their feet can reach the foot rests
