Is one legally obliged to use the main dealership service garage for the vehicle servicing and other works on a new car under warranty. Or may one go to ones regular trustworthy garage and not lose the makers warranty?
If the manufacturer stipulate, as part of the terms and conditions of the new vehicle warranty that the vehicle must be serviced by an authorised dealer then this will need to be done. Most manufacturers will stipulate this as they will be covering the cost of the warranty and not the un-authorised dealer around the corner. Some manufacturers might stipulate that the vehicle can be serviced elsewhere as long as genuine parts are used (bought from the manufacturer-agents) and all their servicing guidelines are adhered to - you would need to prove this. But when things do go wrong they tend to look for reasons not to pay and the whole process of getting the vehicle repaired will be slowed down while you try and prove otherwise.
You need to clear this up with the manufacturer and if they agree to you servicing elsewhere you should ensure you have this in writing from them, to avoid and problems later on.
In short, if the warranty guidelines stipulate you need to service at a authorised agent and you go elsewhere you are unlikely to get any warranty assistance as you have not adhered to the terms and conditions of the warranty.
Another thing to consider is if the vehicle has just gone out of warranty and something major fails, you are unlikely to get any goodwill assistance if you have not been servicing by the agents.
