Hello, my son has just recently bought some neon lights of Trademe for the interior of his car. I would like to know, before he races off and installs them, whether or not they are legal in New Zealand. I saw JCsober's post, the neon lights he was looking at were much brighter than what my son appears to have as they are not LED neon lights. My son has bought some neon lights that make a very dim glow, he said that they were legal as long as they were not distracting any other drivers or not visible from the outside unless you look down on the floor of the car which is the only place they glow according to the Youtube videos I have seen. Even though he strongly thinks that these are legal I always like to be sure first. Cheers.

I do not think these will be legal. Please see the VIRM (Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual) on the NZTA website for further information as it is difficult to say, without seeing these lamps or how they are likely to be installed. As you can see from the VIRM, it seems highly unlikely that these will be legal.
