I would like to import a vintage caravan from the USA.

Is there a limit on nose weights and widths in New Zealand?

Anything else you think I should know would be appreciated.

The dimension limits for a caravan (trailer) in NZ are as follows;

Width 2.5m
Height 4.25m
Length 11.5m
Provided the caravan does not exceed these dimensions and does not weigh more than 3500kgs, It will be able to be imported into NZ as a light vehicle.

If the caravan is over 2000kgs it will require brakes.

There is no legislation regarding maximum load weights on the front of caravan couplings and there is also no legislation on R/H door entry on caravans.

Once the caravan arrives in NZ you need to go to a Vehicle Testing Station or AA Centre and complete a MR2 (application for registration of a VIN exempt vehicle).

The cost is currently $95 and you will receive a number plate and licence label which needs to be attached to the caravan. This allows the caravan to be towed to a Vehicle Testing Station where it must undergo a safety inspection.

Depending on the caravans design you may have to change the tow bar coupling.

Another important item not to be overlooked is the electrical system (interior for lighting etc).

You will need to convert the caravan to operate from a 230 volt power supply. This must be done by a registered electrician (home not auto) and be signed off by an approved inspector. An electrical label is then affixed to the caravan which allows entrance into camping grounds around NZ where power is available. It is also a 'must have' if the caravan is connected to a power source from home
