Is it still legal for older cars to operate on NZ roads with the old style black number plates?

Provided the plate is attached to a car which is currently on the NZ Motor Vehicle Register then it can be used for an indefinite period.
If it is an old, no longer used plate, which somebody wishes to bring back to life then the answer is no.
If the exact number is still available, a new plate can be ordered via 'Personalised Plates'. If this was the case, the new plate would not be the old style black design.
I have heard however of people purchasing and registering an old number through 'Personalised Plates' but using the original black design plates as it fits the age of the particular car better.
