This has been typed by my daughter

My sister has 2 children and is bi-polar I have been asked to look after her children when they are a bit much for her or when there are some urgent issues. I will help out with one at a time I have a letter from the doctor saying I am the caregiver and his main contact if he has to contact someone. I also need to take them to the doctor if they are sick as my sister does not have a licence. I am not a full time caregiver but I am when needed. I will have one of them staying with me for a few days at a time or overnight on a regular basis. I do not get paid but she helps me with petrol money and where she can. The doctor thinks me looking after them is important Can I do this on a restricted licence Can I be a caregiver when needed by her or the doctorThank you

In order for you to carry passengers on a Restricted license, you need to apply to NZTA for an exemption. However, in our experience, it is rare for an exemption to be granted. In order to apply for an exemption, please see the following NZTA link for information about applying for an exemption.

I'm unsure what you are referring to. If you are not the "primary caregiver", (and from what you've told us, the childrens' mother is), there is only one answer to this question, and that is as given above. (ie; you need an exemption to carry these children in your car).

NZTA have strict criteria on who is deemed to be a primary caregiver (eg; the dependents must reside primarily with you, any benefit is paid to you, etc, etc). For further information, you can call the NZTA Helpline on 0800 699 000.
