Hi

I have not been using my car from 08 oct. 2011. Today I got letter from Nz transport about my car license. From 08 oct 2011 I did not do regstration of my car & I did not put my car on hold because I am new in New Zealand & I dn't knw that if we do not put our car on hold & we do not do further registration then we have to pay outstanding fee & then we have to apply for exemption. Can u pls let me know is there any way to put my car on hold now without paying any fees cauz now they are asking to pay 144$ for outstanding license fee.

You are liable to bay the back registration fee of $144, but the sooner you put the registration on hold the better. Once it is on hold you do not need to pay any registration fees. Also, it is very important for a car to have either full registration or exemption at all times. Failure to do this will result in not only payment of fees, but if the vehicle remains unlicensed for a year, the plates will expire and the vehicle will need to go through the compliance process to get it back on the road, which can be an expensive excercise.
