I have just been flashed by a mobile speed camera. It was 6.54am, dark and I couldn't see the camera. Do the mobile cameras have to be visible to the driver to enable the driver to slow down or not?

No, in NZ speed cameras do not have to be signposted. For mobile cameras, the police operate an "anywhere, anytime" approach to speed enforcement which means you need to observe the speed limit at all times.

However, for fixed speed cameras, the purpose is to actually slow traffic down at a location where there is a history of speed-related crashes, so the AA is lobbying for fixed cameras to be signed. A successful fixed speed camera should be one that issues few tickets, because safe speeds are being observed. For more information, read the AA's policy on speed cameras here.
