Hi there,

I have had my car broken into (window smashed) and contents stolen from it - including my Navan. I am with AMI Insurance and they advise that the Navman comes under the car insurance - not my personal contents insurance.
I have had a look at my policy and it states : "In this policy 'your vechicle' means the vehicle described in the policy schedule and includes any standard tools and any accessories or modifications listed" The definition of "Accessories" means "any automotive extras not supplied or fitted by the manufacturer of your vehicle as standard equipment for the model". So I would have to say that my Navman shouldn't come under the car insurance - as it no an accessory or modification listed on my policy, nor can I see it anywhere else in the policy.
In my contents insurance it states that things not covered include : "motor vehicles & their spare parts or accessories"
Can you please advise

Thanks
Anne-Maree

These types of insurance matters are not always readily pidgeon-holed as to which (if any) of your policies they fall under.
As a generalisation, if the accessory is kept in the vehicle, it is usually deemed to be a motor vehicle accessory, so your insurer should be notified of its existance as an accessory.
As contents policies exclude motor vehicle accessories, and if the component is deemed to be a motor vehicle accessory, then the contents policy won't cover it either.
For these reasons, it always pays to notify the insurer of accessories such as this to avoid disappointment if the unfortunate should occur.

My car insurance will cover my Navman and also my FM Auto tune - my issue is that I then have to pay 2 excesses (one for my contents cover & one for my car cover) to claim for all of the personal contents taken from my car - is this correct?

I see your dilema. Some insurance companies have been actively promoting policies recently that combine excesses for a single event. Perhaps you should point this out to your insurer and if they won't come to the party, vote with your wallet and move to another company that will only charge one excess.
