What would be the effect on a vehicles warrenty if an after market temperature guage was installed?. It would not be a replacement for a broken one but be an addition as my vehicle doesn't have one. My vehicle only has a warning light which is supposed to light up when overheating takes place. That surely will be too late as damage could be done before that light appears?.

Many new cars today only have a light, so don't be too disturbed about that. The manufacturer will have built in a margin of safety, so it's unlikely to cause damage as soon as the light comes on.
Having said that, while manufacturers don't like after-market equipment, if you really want a gauge, perhaps getting the authorised manufacturer's dealer to fit one would eliminate the possibility of the manufacturer voiding your warranty in the event of a failure.
However, be sure that any after-market gauge does not interfere in any way with the factory installed system, and cetainly don't drill holes to install sensors etc. So installing a gauge that will not affect the warranty may not be as straight forward as it sounds.

Thank you for your reply, I will probably not bother now. However I just wish I had as much confidence in the manufacturer building in a safety margin as you do. No names no pack drill, or Court case Ha Ha .
