Hi,

I am 15 and turning 16 in the next few months. I have had my class 1 learner car licence since July 2011 and when I turn 16 will have had it for more than 6 months and have a clean driving record. I am looking to apply for an exemption to get my class 1 restricted licence at 16.

I have seen information that if you have a clean record, are over 16 and have had learners for 6 months, the exemption is automatically granted. But on the form it implies in parts that exemptions will be given only if the reviewer of the application feels there is reason such as work that you need the licence and inconvenience and hardship do not count as a reason for the exemption to be granted.

Could you explain to me whether or not the exemption is automatically granted or not and if not what would be the grounds for it to be granted?
