Hello, Could you tell me how heavy a single axle trailer can be before it needs to have brakes?

According to the Light Vehicle Brakes Rule, a trailer with a laden weight of 2000kg or less does not require brakes. Bertween 2000-2500kg it needs a service brake and safety chains (or breakaway brake), and over 2500kg it must have a service brake, parking brake and breakaway brake (see the link for more information, section 2.4).
