hi, i have a nissan vannette with 3 seats in the front and then 1 row of seats in the back, i was wondering if i get a set of seats from an older nissan vannette would i need to get it certified or is it fine to just bolt them into there place and go from there. and also i read somewhere on here that if there is 9 or more seats in a van then seatbelts are not required, is that true? i will have seatbelts in it anyway, just wondering so if i were to possibly squish 4 people on one of the 3 seater seats would they be up for a seat belt fine or would i be up for an overloading fine.

cheers, Shaun.

If your van is a class NA (vehicle primarily for the carriage of goods) and the seats in the back fold up against the back of the driver’s seat, then seatbelts are not required.

However, if you wish to fit seatbelts to that particular seat then the seatbelt type and installation will need to be signed off by a certified seat belt installer.

If you wish to fit another set of seats then both the seats and seatbelts will need to be certified.

You are correct; a passenger service vehicle with more than 9 seats does not require seatbelts but keep in mind that your van is may be registered as a goods vehicle.

Our strongest recommendation is you only ever carry as many people in the vehicle as there are seating positions.
