Hi We're coming over to NZ in February/March next year and are getting baffled by all the different vehicle hire costs. Please could you explain the difference between "standard insurance" (compulsory) and Full Cover Insurance? What should we look out for when comparing insurance costs? Do you do any insurance package yourself that we could purchase for the month? Many thanks.

Unfortunately AA Insurance does not provide insurance cover for rental vehicles and we are not familiar with the different types of cover they have on offer.

We would recommend that you contact the hire company directly to discuss the differences between their standard and full cover insurance options.

We suspect the difference may have something to do with the excess you may have to pay in the result of an accident while full cover may protect you totally even if you were responsible for damage to another vehicle.

Best you get that clarification from the individual rental companies as they could all be different.
