Hi there, I have a 2006 Nissan Vanette, fitted with a rear bench seat. Is it required to have rear seatbelts fitted? Thanks

Not as easy as it sounds to answer.

We would need to know the following information about the vehicle:

  • The class the vehicle is registered under

  • The date of first registration in NZ

  • The manufactured date

A Vehicle Testing Station will be able to provide you with this information.

In fact, armed with this information the VTS should be able to tell you if seatbelts are required and/or if the rear seat itself needs to have Low Volume Vehicle certification.

Based on the information you have provided the van requires seat belts to be fitted to the rear seating positions.

While a lap belt only is acceptable (not the safest restraint belt) for the centre rear seating position, the outer positions must have at least a single-sensitive emergency-locking retractor (ELR) lap and diagonal seatbelt.
