I have been told a vehicle over 40 years of age can be registered as a classic at a lower fee.
Is this correct?

Yes this is correct.
The change in fees and class happens automatically when the vehicle is re-registered either on-line or at a NZTA agency.
The fee is currently half that of a standard car.
