I was wondering if you could tell me if it is illegal to have your number plate mounted on a lean?

Because my car is European (Mercedes) the standard government plates do not fit properly, hence the reason for the angle and only one bolt securing it to the body.

I was pulled over and told by a police officer recently that if I don’t straighten the plate I could be liable for a $150 fine.

What shall I do?

I would imagine the plate would have to be on a rather large lean for a traffic officer to pull you over unless they were having a real bad day or were being a little pedantic.

The NZ Gazette states a number plate must be in an upright position, clearly displaying every letter/number or distinguishing mark.

It must also be clearly visible during day and night.

There has to be a way to straighten the plate to avoid being stopped again Wayne.

Often you become a target if you have been asked to sort out a issue like this and you ignore it.

Who needs the hassle for what is probably a relatively cheap and easy fix.

As an extra incentive to get it sorted ASAP, I have found out the actual fine for this offence is $200 in addition to 25 demerit points.
