Hi - we are granparents and are hitting the stage where we are transporting under 7-year olds of various ages. I am unclear as to when a child qualifies to use a booster seat (ie just a seat pad that adds height to the child) as opposed to a full restraint type of seat that the child sits in and which comes with its own harnesses.

I have looked at various web sites but getting to grips with what the actual law is tricky because of terminology (eg the word 'booster' often seems to be used to mean any an all child seating) and some sites phrase things in terms of what they believe is optimal, but under the guise of stating what the law says. It's a nightmare. I would like to know what is legally required.
