I am making an assumption this bike will fall under the classification of a moped. This means the bike has an engine capacity not exceeding 50ml and has top speed not exceeding 50km/h.

Your first task is to take the bike to a TSDA agent (Vehicle Testing Station) to confirm it does in fact meet the requirements of a moped. There is a form (MR2B) that needs to be completed and signed off.

In addition to the MR2B form, you also need to provide evidence of the bike being previously registered in NZ and proof of ownership. If you can meet these requirements the bike can be re-registered as a paperwork transaction only.

It does not currently need to undergo the same inspection and certification process as a moped being registered for the first time (effective from July 2011).

The bike does not require a regular warrant of fitness however it will need to meet a certain standard depending on age.

Refer to the NZTA website for more information.
