Hi we had to remove our tints also even though it got a wof from vinz and a code of compliance when first arrived in nz. We bought it from a dealer. Then vtnz failed it. When we took it back today I had looked up nzta.govt rules and yes it states 35% on all windows bar front. but then at the end of the rules it says all vehicles can have any tint in the rear as long as it has external mirrors. Very conflicting words. Our car is a sedan but all wheel drive, the person who gave us the wof at the end when we told him this he said that puts it in a different category. When you get a VLT test where are they supposed to measure the light from with the meter through the window. Also do they have to show you the calibration of the light meter. Also why do you see station wagons etc with dark tinted windows. They are still classed as MA as per nzta.govt rules. I also can't see what tinted windows in the rear makes to the way the vehicle drives or the safety of it.
Hi Jules
The inspections manual is open source here is a link to all the rules for glazing. It contains all the rules and requirements for inspectors I hope this helps..

Thanks for that I had read it. Note 1 it states that if a vehicle has tinted on the back and rear windows it must have a left and right exterior mirror. Which our car had but the person still failed it. If we hadn't got a different person he would still have failed. The car is 2011 audi. anyway we have the wof now even though we had to take the side tints off. Which we were not happy about. That is how things go.
