Hi. I have purchased a small 800 Kg UK caravan 2001 from the UK from a NZ dealer. It has a brakeaway cable system. There seems to be debate among caravan owners that I have asked whether to swap to a chain-to- car system. Also told to not have the breakaway and chain operating at the same time. (I cant see why not). My preference is chain only. Please advise if possible.

I have found the requirement in the VIRM
A trailer 2000kg or less must have a compliant breakaway brake, or have a safety chain or cable. I don't so a reason why you couldn't have both a breakaway brake and chain.
