I have just had a carrier set up on my car tow bar for my scooter. I am getting a light bar set up for the tail lights. However when loaded the scooter blocks the view of the rear number plate. I would like to paint the number on to the carrier, but would this be sufficient or legal.

It is illegal to make up your own number plate which until recently was a somewhat ridiculous situation for those wishing to ensure their rear registration number was visible at all times.

A recent law change however has allowed owners to apply for a third plate when attachments like yours obscures the view of the existing plate.

You need to apply directly to licensys (the company who has the NZ license to produce the official number plates).

The cost is currently $17.08. Their details’ are www.licensys.com or 0800remake.

A number plate/light board has just been released by a company called Ezigrip (part of Bestbars, who manufacture towbars in NZ) for this exact purpose which may appeal to you. Contact them on 09 269 0582 for more details.
