I returned a car to a lease company nearly a year ago. I had the plate listed on NZTA toll account, but never actually used a toll road (from what I can remember). I filled all the paperwork for change of keeper, but had forgotten about the toll account (I never use toll roads). Some time in April or May of this year the current keeper of my previous car used a toll road and NZTA are charging me around $30. I am refusing to pay this. They are saying that because I didn't remove the plate from the account I am still responsible according to their terms and conditions. Surely this is not enforceable? What happens if a motorist doesn't have an account? I'm sure NZTA would find them fast enough. The account is purely for convenience.
Please advise. Fiona

Hi Fiona,
The only thing we can suggest is to take the matter to a disputes tribunal of you feel you are not getting resolution and their charges are unjustified. https://disputestribunal.govt.nz/
