Dear Community,

What is the correct (or usual) way to reverse a car into a parking space?
(*Not reverse parallel park or angle park, just the usual 90 degree parking*)
Is it the same for both left and right parking?

Would really appreciate if someone could help me out on this.

Hi there,
The AA driving school have given some advise below, I can only attach a link to a visual guide by another source that provides similar information.
We recommend to students that when they reverse they look over their left shoulder into the back seat rear passenger window. Once they can see the (carpark) line enter the their sight they can start to turn into the space. Every car will have a different turning point based on its wheel base.

Hi Cade,

Thank you for such a quick reply! I wasn't expecting such an immediate response.

The link you gave me was very helpful. However it only shows reverse parking for a bay on the LEFT.

Would you happen to know what the correct/ideal steps are if the parking is on the right hand side?

Also, usually the car behind will follow closely even if there was a turn signal indicating, how would I be able to avoid awkward situations like this? I assume that the driver behind didnt expect a reverse park.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Thank you!

Hi there,
If the lane is two lane with traffic going both directions, then it is not recommended to park on the right- you would need to turn around and approach the park from the left. This is because we are always driving on the LH side of the road and it wouldn't be safe to reverse across the path of traffic.
If there is a vehicle behind you , then you would indicate early and slow down to let them know you are intending to make a parking manoeuvre- they will either wait behind you or go around. If they stop too close, you may need to wait until it is safe for them to pass, in order for you to park.
