We recently put a car on hold and they said it’s ok we just need to put a $300 dollar deposit so we did only to find out it is non refundable. Is that legal?

Be wary of making cash deposits. Dealers don’t have to refund you if you decide not to buy the car.
Unless this contract had conditions, (eg subject to finance) on which the deposit would be refunded. There is no obligation to refund.
