I was in an accident recently and my car was towed. I did not have insurance. The case will be going to court and if the other party is convicted of careless driving (I think that’s the charge), the police will pursue costs on my behalf. But if the person who ran the red light is not convicted, who will cover the cost of towing my vehicle and storing it? It looks like this is going to be a long, drawn-out process and I'm worried the fees will soon be astronomical. Should I get an assessor in to determine if my car can be repaired? If I sold the car for scrap, would that affect any potential insurance payout?

Hi there,
Because you are not insured, the welfare of the vehicle will be your responsibility until their insurance company has been notified (if they choose to make a claim, or are insured) and contact and instruction is given by a claim manager.
I don't recommend selling the car just yet, because if an insurance company is involved then they would possibly own the vehicle if it is a write-off and a full pay-out is applied.
It would be a good idea to have your vehicle assessed for repair costs, just in-case the at fault party doesn't have insurance or they refuse to honour a claim. In these cases (no insurance) it is often the vehicle owners responsibility to pay for any costs/ losses up front (towing, storage, repairs or vehicle write-off reimbursement) and they may need to be claimed back in a disputes tribunal.
