Hi,

I recently (5 days ago) had my cambelt changed, part of the process was to remove the radiator. Yesterday while I was out my car began to overheat. I pulled over, checked the coolant levels and the top tank and overflow tank for the radiator were bone dry and there was considerable coolant on the road.

I called a friend and he bought me some water which we used to limp back home. We filled the car back up with fresh coolant (had some on hand) and noticed that there was a consistent leak from somewhere on the radiator (top and bottom hoses were fine, no cracks etc).

The work was done a reputable mechanics (specializes in my make of vehicle) but I have reason to believe that during the removal/installation of the radiator it was damaged in some way resulting in the leak.

I have a history (3 years) with the mechanics, have had regular (5000km) servicing there during which there has been no indication the radiator was weak/damaged/rusting. Prior to Wednesday, I have had no issue with coolant leaks/overheating.

The car is getting looked at tomorrow.

My question is, in the event that the radiator is damaged, would/should the mechanics cover the cost of the replacement?

Hi there,
If a workshop has caused damage in the course of carrying out a particular job, then I would expect them to give a remedy.
It may be best to obtain a second opinion and then give the garage a right to remedy before you have any repairs carried out. Information can be found here: https://www.consumerprotection.govt.nz/report-or-resolve-a-problem/general-problems/
