hi, I have an Isuzu diesel truck which is both a horse truck and a 'camper'. I am taking a trip with friends who are anxious to pay their full share of costs . they have suggested we find a per km rate and share it between us.
The truck has an 8.2 litre engine and an automatic gearbox and is about 10 years old. on a recent trip it used about 57 litres of fuel for 226 km, and I know that RUC work out at $134.80 for 1000 km. can you suggest an appropriate mileage rate to take into account other running costs? thanks so much
Here at the AA we calculate running costs for light vehicles, and we include all costs including fuel, repairs, maintenance, tyres, WoF, reg, insurance, depreciation etc, but we have no data for heavy trucks.
The fuel consumption you suggest seems high at over 25L/100km, but not knowing heavy vehicles well, perhaps this is correct.
Assuming your numbers are correct, and taking into account a price of $1.25 per litre of fuel and $134.80 for RUC, just the cost of fuel and RUC alone equates to around 45c per km. Unfortunately, I don't have any data for calculating the other costs on a heavy vehicle such as this.
thanks so much for trying! to be fair, it was carrying 2 big horses, 180 litres of water, and 4 people and was fully laden with tack , feed, and people stuff - stuffed to the gunnesl really - and much of the road was tortuous, so I guess it was not a very representative journey. Thanks for pointing hat out to me!!
