Only BP and Mobil seem to sell 98 octane, the recommended petrol for my VW Passat. Can I fill up with 95, being the highest octane petrol sold at other gas stations, or will this be detrimental to my car?

According to our technical sources at VW, there are no Passat models which must run on 98. They tell us that there may be some models where 98 is preferred, but all can safely be operated on 95.
