I have just bought a 2002 Nissan Pulsar 1.8 over the weekend. The sticker on the petrol flap says to use 95 octane fuel. Can I use the cheaper 91?

No. If the manufacturer recommends a high octane fuel it is because that is what the engine is designed to run on - generally due to the compression ratio. Also, running the vehicle on the lower octane fuel is unlikely to work out any cheaper. The higher efficiency of 95 octane fuel means that the vehicle travels further per litre, therefore, in testing we have done, there is little or no difference in the overall cost of fuel.
